Essential Oil Vapes: Is Vaping Essential Oils Safe?

Although they look similar, there are significant differences between vapes and personal essential oil diffusers.

“Hippie Juul” or “Healthy Juul” – as the makers of an essential oil vape-like product, we hear that a lot. And we get it; we actually think it’s pretty clever and have replied jokingly to those comments on our social media accounts.

However, with all of the recent headlines about the health risks associated with vaping, we figured that now is a good time to get specific about the differences between the processes and products involved with traditional vaping and with using a personal essential oil diffuser — which admittedly looks a lot like vaping.

Vaping essential oils
Although personal oil diffusers look a lot like vaping, there are differences when it comes to health risks.

Learn how the usage, products, ingredients, and intent of an “essential oil vape” product varies from the health risks associated with e-cigarettes.

One of the most significant differences between traditional nicotine vapes and personal essential oil diffusers involves the way the products are designed to be used. Nicotine requires inhalation into the lungs, which has negative effects over time regardless of ingredients (and the ingredients are definitely a problem).

Products like our KININ Eco are designed to be breathed in through the mouth and instantly exhaled through the nose without inhalation into the lungs. This allows for direct impact to the olfactory system and is the proper therapeutic approach to aromatherapy. Our products are not intended to be inhaled.

Unlike traditional vaping, the KININ Eco doesn't require inhalation into the lungs.
The proper usage of the KININ Eco involves breathing in through the mouth and exhaling through the nose.

Appropriate usage ensures that the lungs aren’t exposed to the vapor at all.

Although we don’t ever call it that, we are well aware that the KININ Eco resembles a vape pen, and it’s true that the actual mechanism involved with producing vapor is similar between e-cigarettes and personal essential oil diffusers. However, the battery, the pods, and the liquid all vary greatly between traditional vapes and the KININ Eco.

The KININ Eco is a personal essential oil diffuser and not a traditional vape.
The KININ Eco is carefully calibrated to diffuse ingredients at appropriate temperatures.

For instance, Juuls use cotton wicks at fairly high temperatures and low electrical resistance; Juul pods are 1.2 to 1.4 Ohm resistance and the battery is 4.2V at 9 Watts.

The Eco uses a ceramic coil at very low temperatures and high electrical resistance, which is appropriate for organic material; Eco pods are 1.9 Ohm resistance and the battery is 3.6V at 5 Watts.

Burning organic matter can create a toxic byproduct – the KININ Eco negates that risk with calibrated temperatures that are explicitly designed for botanicals so that burning never occurs.

The ingredients contained in traditional vape pods are a cause for concern. Nicotine is the most obvious culprit, due to its highly addictive nature; however, it’s not the only vape pod villain.

The flavor additives that mimic tastes like mango or cotton candy have the ability to create harmful substances such as formaldehyde and acrolein when heated – both can cause irreversible damage to lungs and blood vessels.

Juul pods contain harmful ingredients.
Juul pods include artificial flavoring and harmful ingredients.

Aside from the artificial flavoring, vape pods contain other chemicals, toxins, and contaminates to maintain the consistency of the juice and to produce vape clouds. Propylene Glycol is one such harmful substance. It’s derived from petroleum and is found in polymers and anti-freeze; its primary role is the be a carrier for artificial flavors.

Propylene Glycol (PG) was also named the American Contact Dermatitis Society’s Allergen of the Year for 2018 due to the high number of people who experience an allergic reaction after exposure to PG.

KININ wellness pods use Vegetable Glycerin (VG) which is generally recognized as safe by the FDA. Your body naturally produces it while eating, and is capable of metabolizing VG – none of this is the case with PG.

Our pods are also entirely nicotine free, and our ingredients list is simple:

  • USDA certified organic essential oils
  • Kosher grade, palm-derived vegetable glycerin
  • Water

There are no addictive properties in anything, and everything is properly diluted. All of our organics are tested by a third-party lab, are either Oregon Tilth certified organic, certified wild, or meet common safety criteria. None of our products contain artificial colors or flavors, and all of our blends are vegan-safe.

The liquid in our essential oil vape pods is all natural and organic.
The ingredients in our wellness pods are organic and contain no artificial ingredients or flavoring.

The botanic liquid we make has oversight from an organic chemist, and the ratios of plant extract to VG make the product very similar to what you would experience in a room diffuser, adjusted for proximity.

We take your health and the quality of our products seriously.

Last, but certainly not least, is the intent of each product. JUUL will verify that their intent is to deliver a “smoking experience” meaning that the primary purpose is to deliver nicotine. We understand the appeal of “vaping” and the potential dangers associated with nicotine addiction.

Our intent is to deliver an aromatherapy experience in the form of terpenes from various plants. Using portable aromatherapy diffusers may lead to a serious fondness for pleasing scents, which is definitely preferable.
