Beautiful and fragrant, chamomile essential oil is produced from the lovely flowers of the several different varieties of the chamomile plant (either matricaria Recutita or Chamaemelum noble). The plant ranges in size from 12 to 24 inches tall, depending on the variety – German Chamomile is an annual that is substantially larger than it’s perennial cousin, Roman Chamomile.

All varieties of chamomile have been thoroughly studied for their various medicinal properties, dating back to ancient egypt, where it was used as both a skin care supplement and to treat many ailments, including headache, anxiety, fever, and inflammation.

Roman Chamomile has a range of health benefits, including:

Relief from Stress and Anxiety

High in alpha-pinene, (ours rates at apx 3.41%), chamomile can be very effective in relieving anxiety and stress. In one study, participants who consumed 220mG of chamomile extract showed “significant improvements in mood as measured on a depression rating scale.”

Allergy Relief

Chamomile acts as a natural decongestant, which allows it to act as a relief to hay fever, and other seasonal allergies.

Inflammation Reduction

According to a study published in 2009 in the medical journal “Life Science”, chamomile tea may be as, or more effective at reducing inflammation than some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as NSAIDS by “inhibiting the release of inflammatory prostaglandin molecules  from white blood cells in a manner similar to COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2).

Digestion

According to a 2006 study by the University of Maryland Medical Center, chamomile can significantly reduce the duration of of IBS symptoms.
